Updated: Dec 8, 2021

One may ask, “how could they afford to spend plenty of time to have their room organized?”. Conversely, the time consumed for doing such is to have a more productive and sane time. Yes, it is to break away from stress.

College, even before the pandemic, has already been a hassle. Different agendas are set on foot for every student. There are academic loads that are devastating in quantity that require a lot of time for quality output. Some also are committed to their individual and team tasks in their organizations. Besides these, some also need to attend to their household chores; worse, some even need extra energy for working side by side to suffice for their financial needs. To help you break away from stress, a little room renovation might help.

The purpose of having an organized room does not end with its aesthetic aspect. Instead, it attends to an individual’s capacity to work and free themselves from stress. Its job is to make college life more manageable and also to be a little fancier! Keep your pace as all those mental blocks, and unmotivated souls will later experience a different kind of wonder. Just pay attention to the following ideas as they might help you achieve your organized and stress-free-vibe room.

KonMari Method: A Guide in Tidying Your Things Up

Looking through the various tips that influencers laid out about organizing, Marie Kondo is well-known for her method of decluttering and room organization. She is commonly popular through her bestselling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. In 2019, she also had her Netflix show called “Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.” Hence, derived from her name, she trademarked her ideas as the KonMari Method.

Truth holds that college students are commonly stressed due to their various workloads. In fact, Senior High School student also dwells on the same weights. There is only a year left, or a few months for some students before college entrance exams will start to put them on their verges. Then, soon after, they will enter college and will experience the next level of stress.

A Grade 12 Samantha says, “I know how stressful college is, as to how I see my cousins go on with theirs, and I think it is a good thing that I already started making my room a comfortable space for such.” We all know that when someone is stressed, thinking straight is a hard thing to do. However, ideas will start to flow through when you are calm — when you put yourself in a comfortable space.

On the other hand, Ayra and Anjyrei, college students, shared their sentiments about their relief whenever they organized their rooms. From the taxing activities outside and inside the school, Ayra said she could reside in her room for a rest, even for a whole day, without feeling exhausted. And yes! It is mainly because of her organized room. Likewise, Anjyrei also mentioned that cleaning and organizing tend her whenever she gets irritated. She emphasized that it calms her and helps her think straight as cleaning is a grounding action. Both of them are on the same stand that it is a good thing that they started this practice ever since they were a child.

Following through the KonMari Method, a room could be styled in a minimalist-inspired approach. Indeed, having to enjoy your ideal room after organizing is a relief, but the very process of organizing is satisfying and can divert your attention away from stress. By that, you can enjoy yourself as you follow some of KonMari's methods.

What Happens When You do KonMari Method

“I remove things that don't spark joy.”

Among the famous ideas in the KonMari Method is only to keep things that spark your joy. Anjyrei also supports Marie Kondo’s idea — that if you are going to discard and decrease the number of objects in your room, ask yourself whether it still brings you joy.

“Paper works from my previous schools were discarded.”

You might get the hang of the idea that you can look back through the lessons that you have learned from your past school years, but the truth is that you never skimmed through them again. Samantha says that in preparation for college, the first thing to do is to accept that you will never need them again and that you must get rid of all the paper works you have in your storage.

“Even if it’s hard, nostalgia must not be our friend when tidying.”

Movie tickets, birthday souvenirs, containers of the food you ate… and those silly dried flowers from your failed dates do not have a space for your room. You can only keep those if they have been part of your collection. Otherwise, they will only consume space that is better left cleared out. According to Anjyrei, it is important to declutter because getting rid of things we do not need is like taking out negative energy. Take a hint if you are still holding on to the good nostalgia. If not, say goodbye!

“It's like living in a place that's tailor-fitted for me.”

The KonMari Method also emphasized the point of imagining your ideal lifestyle. It is the best reminder that more than having a presentable room, decluttering and organizing your room is for your own comfort. Ayra shares that 'personal touch' is one of the reasons she finds comfort with. From the color to the designs, all the details in her room reflect her personality.

“The space of my room and how things are arranged makes me comfortable.”

Ayra shared that when you start loving your room as to how it was organized, you will always know if a thing or two was moved without your permission. But aside from ensuring that your things are put into different compartments and rooms exactly where you want them to be, it is best to place objects in the same category per area. Anjyrei further supported this as she spoke about how she always loved it when the bedsheets were newly replaced and when the charger cords were organized. She said that the bedroom then serves as a place of refuge for her.

Books are arranged in one place

Clothes in the Closet or on a rack are organized per category

A space for a comfortable study area

Space for cute stuff and collections that definitely gives you joy

A comfortable bed to lay down on

On another note, a decluttered and organized room is not only good for the eyes as it also helps one focus on what he/she needs to do as the clutter would not add up to the things that bother them.

To keep your room clean is also one point you need to consider. As Samantha emphasized, “throw away your trash as soon as possible!”

Be Extra!

Yet and all, before you start organizing your room, it is also essential that you have the spaces you need for your ideal outcome. If you already have the resources, stop thinking twice. Start designing your room and have it renovated the way you like. Remember, having the right spaces is also the key to better results. Conversely, if your budget is not up for a total room renovation, you can start by buying organizers, drawers, and bookshelves.
